The zarb, or tonbak, is a goblet-shaped drum carved from a solid piece of wood. The unique playing style consists of rolling and snapping the fingers in various ways. Its sound ranges from subtle to powerful, which allows the musician to ornament melody lines as well as play the rhythm.
The daf is a large (approx. 21" diameter) frame drum with metal rings around the inner rim. It has an amazing range of sounds, and the metal rings add a jingle or snare effect depending on how it is played. The daf is used by Persians and Kurds in folk music and in the spiritual ceremonies of the Sufis.
